In this session, Ebony Noelle Golden will lead an interactive session with participants exploring creative approaches to liberation, RSC's principles of community engagement while framing the scope and range of the weekend intensive.  The session includes improv, theatre of the oppressed techniques and culminates with the writing of a collective manifesto.

Your cultural group, collective or organization is not an abstraction that floats around out in space separate from you. Groups are made up of people. People tell stories. What are the stories being told amongst your group? Who is telling them? Who gets listened to? Most importantly, how can you deconstruct and build a new more inclusive, accurate story from a space of liberation?

I will present a workshop combining writing and performing, using jazz improvisation-scat in three stages:  1) writing assignment 2) using scat to replace the previously written words  3) final group performance piece combining scat and poetry. The workshop will include assistance from jazz pianist-composer, Victor Moore.

Redemption Songs

This workshop explores the redemptive, healing and emancipatory power of music and poetry. Looking at both historical and contemporary examples, participants will analyze the lyrics of various redemption songs and write their own histories in this interactive workshop.


Cultural Arts Direct Action: The Creative and the Strategic Road Map

In this session, Ebony Noelle Golden will lead participants in a process of mapping out the next steps for using art and culture for change. Participants should come prepared to talk about a tangible shift they want to see in their communities and how they want to use art and culture to do that work.  This session combines John O'Neal's story circle methodology, writing, visual arts and direct act campaign design.
